Former Sokoto North Senatorial District Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Senator Ahmed Muhammad Maccido, has joined the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a leading figure in the party in Sokoto State, presented Maccido to ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar during a meeting in Abuja.

Tambuwal attended the meeting alongside the ADC Deputy Director-General for Administration, Yusuf Suleiman, and other party leaders and stakeholders from Sokoto.

The development followed Maccido’s withdrawal as the PDP candidate for the Sokoto North Senatorial District election.

In a letter dated September 30, Maccido formally notified the PDP of his decision to withdraw his candidature, describing the decision as voluntary.

He did not state a reason for the withdrawal or disclose his next political move in the letter.

His subsequent appearance with ADC leaders and presentation to Atiku confirmed his movement into the opposition party amid continuing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Sokoto State PDP has criticised the timing of Maccido’s withdrawal and raised questions about possible external political influence.

State PDP Chairman Hayattu Tafida said Maccido had significant political support in the senatorial district and expressed concern that the withdrawal came at a stage when replacing a candidate could prove difficult.

The party chairman, however, did not provide evidence establishing that another political party pressured Maccido to withdraw.

Maccido previously represented Sokoto North in the Senate and had been listed as the PDP candidate for the district before his withdrawal.

His move adds another dimension to the political realignment in Sokoto State as parties strengthen their structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
