A high chief has died after being shot during the funeral rites of another traditional chief in Ayeka community, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident occurred during traditional ceremonies attended by family members, community leaders and residents.
Witness accounts indicated that the victim was among traditional chiefs participating in the funeral rites when a firearm was discharged, striking him in the head.

The ceremony was immediately disrupted as residents and other participants reacted to the shooting.
Local accounts suggested that firearms were being discharged during the funeral activities when the incident occurred. The precise circumstances surrounding the shooting, however, remain under investigation.
The identities of the deceased chief and the traditional chief whose funeral was being conducted had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that one person had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said the police had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine responsibility.
The police are expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
