Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, has condemned the killing of 15 farmers in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, warning that attacks on farming communities pose a threat to Nigeria’s food security.

Kyari said the farmers were reportedly killed by suspected terrorists while working on their farms, describing the incident as an attack not only on lives and livelihoods but also on the country’s efforts to strengthen food production.

The minister expressed condolences to the families of the victims, residents of Marte and the Borno State Government.

He said protecting farmers and agricultural communities remained critical to ensuring that Nigerians could cultivate their farms without fear and contribute to the country’s food supply.

“Protecting our farmers is protecting Nigeria’s food security,” Kyari said.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving security around farming communities and creating conditions that would allow agricultural activities to continue safely.

Kyari also commended security agencies for their efforts in protecting rural communities but urged them to intensify operations aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack.

He further called for urgent efforts to locate three people reportedly still missing following the incident.

The minister said the continued targeting of farmers could disrupt agricultural production and undermine efforts to improve food availability across the country.

He urged security agencies and relevant authorities to strengthen protection for farmers, particularly in communities vulnerable to attacks, while expressing hope that those responsible for the killings would be brought to justice.
