Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the 2027 general elections will test Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to prioritise peace, unity and justice as the country moves towards another electoral season.
Jonathan made the remarks in his Independence Day message on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary of independence.
The former president said Nigeria had faced numerous challenges since gaining independence in 1960 but had repeatedly demonstrated resilience in confronting periods of difficulty.

He urged Nigerians to use the anniversary to reflect on the country’s journey and renew their commitment to building a peaceful, secure and prosperous nation.
Turning to the 2027 elections, Jonathan said the approaching electoral season would provide another test of the country’s democratic development.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.
Jonathan urged citizens and political actors to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions capable of undermining national cohesion.
He said Nigeria possessed significant human and natural resources that could support sustainable development if properly harnessed, while encouraging young Nigerians to remain hopeful and actively contribute to the country’s progress.

The former president also called for greater responsibility from leaders at all levels, saying the country’s social and economic challenges required patriotism, accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” Jonathan said.
He called for responsible governance and personal sacrifice in addressing the challenges confronting Nigerians.
Jonathan further urged citizens to demonstrate greater commitment to national service and work collectively towards building a more peaceful, secure and equitable country.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he said.
