The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced construction of a new National Control Centre for the Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, in Osogbo, Osun State, as part of efforts to modernise the management of Nigeria’s national electricity grid.
The facility is expected to replace the existing National Control Centre, which has operated for more than six decades.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said the project would provide NISO with improved real-time visibility of activities across the national grid and strengthen operators’ ability to respond to system disturbances.
According to the minister, the new centre forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address infrastructure and operational challenges affecting the electricity sector.
The facility is expected to deploy an integrated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition SCADA) system, advanced analytics and large-format display systems to give grid operators more comprehensive information on electricity generation and transmission.
The technology is designed to enable operators to monitor the grid in real time, identify emerging faults and coordinate responses when disturbances occur.
It is also expected to improve maintenance planning and help NISO optimise available generation and transmission capacity.
The government said the new centre would strengthen the system operator’s ability to manage an increasingly complex electricity network as additional generation sources are connected to the grid.
The facility is also being designed to support the integration of renewable energy sources and improve coordination with countries participating in the West African Power Pool.
Enhanced physical security and cybersecurity systems are expected to form part of the project to protect the control centre and other critical electricity infrastructure.
The government said replacing the ageing control facility would provide NISO with a more modern technological platform for monitoring electricity flows, coordinating grid operations and responding to system emergencies.
The project comes as Nigeria continues efforts to improve electricity reliability through investments across generation, transmission, distribution and system management.
