The Rivers State Government has cancelled the traditional Independence Day parade as Nigeria prepares to mark its 66th independence anniversary on Thursday, October 1.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, announced the decision in a statement, saying it was in line with the approach adopted by the Federal Government for this year’s celebration.
Wokoma said the state would instead observe the anniversary in a simpler and more purposeful manner, with emphasis on reflection and the responsibilities of citizens and government in building a stronger and more prosperous country.
He urged residents to use the occasion to reflect on the significance of Nigeria’s independence and the collective responsibility required to strengthen peace, unity and national development.
The state government also encouraged residents to demonstrate patriotism and commemorate the anniversary responsibly in ways that promote national cohesion.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, making Thursday’s anniversary the country’s 66th year of independence.
The government said the absence of the traditional parade would not diminish the significance of the occasion, but would instead place greater emphasis on reflection and national responsibility.
Wokoma called on Rivers residents to consider the country’s progress since independence as well as the challenges that require collective action from citizens and government.
He wished residents a peaceful Independence Day celebration and urged them to continue supporting efforts aimed at promoting peace, unity and development in Rivers State and across Nigeria.
