The Ondo State Government has given owners of abandoned heavy-duty vehicles, trucks, trailers, construction machinery and large watercraft obstructing roads and waterways across the state seven days to remove them.
The directive, which takes effect from Wednesday, September 30, is part of measures aimed at addressing safety risks associated with abandoned equipment in public spaces.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Emergency Response and Safety Enforcement, Wellington Adebawo, announced the directive while speaking with journalists in Akure on Wednesday.
Adebawo said the government was concerned about the increasing presence of unattended heavy vehicles and machinery on roads, as well as abandoned boats, barges and other large watercraft on waterways.
He said such objects could obstruct traffic, reduce available road space and visibility, and expose motorists, pedestrians, commuters and waterway users to avoidable accidents.
According to him, the state government conducted a survey across the 18 local government areas to identify abandoned heavy-duty vehicles, machinery and other obstructions requiring intervention.
Affected companies, businesses and individuals were directed to immediately remove their equipment from roads and other public spaces and relocate them to safe and appropriate locations.
Owners of abandoned boats, barges and other commercial watercraft were also directed to retrieve their vessels and move them to designated safe locations.
Adebawo said the directive was primarily a preventive safety measure and was not targeted at legitimate businesses or individuals.
He warned that owners who fail to comply by October 7 could face enforcement action, including the removal and impoundment of affected vehicles, machinery and watercraft.
According to him, items removed by the government could also be liable to forfeiture in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
“There shall be no extension or grace period beyond the seven-day deadline,” Adebawo said, urging affected owners and operators to comply within the stipulated period.
He said the administration remained committed to strengthening emergency response, safety enforcement and preventive measures aimed at protecting lives and property across Ondo State.
