Italian club AS Roma have ruled out Argentina internationals Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina from Argentina’s October 6 farewell match for Lionel Messi against Benin.
Roma cited sporting and logistical considerations, including the demands of long-distance travel and the proximity of the fixture to the club’s scheduled commitments.
The club announced the decision on Tuesday while acknowledging the significance of the occasion for both players.
Dybala and Molina were members of Argentina’s squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and have played alongside Messi for the national team.
“The Club recognises the importance of this appointment for the two players, who are linked to Lionel Messi and played a key role in his victory at the 2022 World Cup,” Roma said.
The Italian side said its decision was not intended to diminish the significance of Messi’s farewell or his achievements during his international career.
Roma expressed its respect for the Argentina captain and wished him and the Argentine Football Association well ahead of the fixture.
“AS Roma expresses its utmost respect for Lionel Messi and his extraordinary career, wishing him and the Argentine Federation a special evening,” the club added.
The Argentina-Benin match is scheduled for October 6 and is expected to form part of events marking Messi’s international career.
Dybala and Molina will consequently miss the fixture despite having shared Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph with Messi.
