The Rivers Alternative has raised security concerns following its candidate declaration event held in Rivers State on September 27, 2026.
A member of the group, Comrade Somina Wokoma, said in a video that the organisation had notified relevant security authorities ahead of the event and requested adequate security arrangements to protect participants.
According to Wokoma, members became concerned after arriving at the venue and observing what they considered an inadequate security presence.
He also alleged that some individuals were seen monitoring activities around the venue, causing further concern among members about the safety of participants.
Wokoma claimed that the group subsequently received reports suggesting that some individuals may have been deployed to disrupt the gathering.
The claims have not been independently verified, and no evidence establishing that the individuals were deployed to disrupt the event was presented in the account.
The Rivers Alternative called on relevant security agencies to investigate the concerns and take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of people attending political gatherings.
The group also appealed to the Federal Government and other relevant authorities to protect citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and political participation.
It urged security agencies to remain neutral and provide adequate protection for political activities as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
Wokoma maintained that the safety of participants should remain a priority at political gatherings as parties, candidates and political groups increase their activities ahead of the elections.
