The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, has issued a fresh flood safety warning to Abuja residents following heavy and persistent rainfall across the Federal Capital Territory.
FCT Command Controller, Muhammed Anas, urged residents, particularly those in low-lying communities, riverbanks and areas with inadequate drainage, to remain vigilant.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Anas warned that human activities could worsen flooding and stressed that preventing loss of lives and property required cooperation between residents and relevant authorities.
The Service cautioned against dumping refuse in drains, gutters, canals and waterways, as well as constructing buildings on floodplains, waterways and drainage channels.
It also identified blocked drains, sand dredging, indiscriminate excavation around rivers and streams, and poorly constructed roads and culverts as factors that could obstruct water flow and increase flood risks.
Residents were advised to regularly clear drains and gutters, monitor weather forecasts and comply with flood alerts issued by relevant authorities.
The FFS warned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges, streams or rivers, stressing that floodwaters could pose danger even when they appear shallow.
Parents were also advised to keep children away from floodwaters, open drains, rivers and culverts.
Residents affected by flooding were urged to switch off electrical appliances where it is safe to do so, avoid contact with electrical installations exposed to water and immediately move to higher ground or another safe location.
The Service also advised households to prioritise the evacuation of children, elderly persons and persons with disabilities and warned against drinking or using floodwater because of possible contamination.
Anas reaffirmed the FCT Command’s commitment to responding to emergencies and protecting lives and property across the territory.
Residents were urged to promptly report flood incidents and other emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
