United States President Donald Trump has denied reports that his administration offered Iran sanctions relief and access to frozen funds as part of negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict between the two countries.
Trump rejected the reports in a social media post, describing them as a “hoax” as diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran continued through intermediaries.
The denial comes amid efforts by mediators to narrow differences between the two sides and prevent renewed hostilities.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had held further indirect discussions with the United States through Qatari mediators in New York.
According to Araghchi, Iran was awaiting a formal response from Washington to proposals discussed through the mediators.
He said Tehran expected to receive the US response by Tuesday, expressing hope that the diplomatic process would move forward.
The exchanges come amid uncertainty over prospects for an agreement between Washington and Tehran, with both sides publicly maintaining different positions on the conditions required to resolve the conflict.
Iran has repeatedly said it remains open to diplomacy while insisting that any agreement must address its economic and security concerns. Washington, meanwhile, has maintained pressure on Tehran while continuing indirect diplomatic contacts.
Elsewhere in the region, the United Arab Emirates confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a visit to the Gulf state over the weekend.
The meeting took place as regional governments continued diplomatic engagements amid tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Attention is now focused on the anticipated US response to the latest diplomatic contacts and whether the indirect negotiations will produce progress towards an agreement.
