At least 91 people have died across India, Nepal and Thailand following days of torrential rainfall that triggered widespread flooding, landslides, destruction of homes and mass evacuations across parts of South and Southeast Asia.
Northern India has recorded the highest reported death toll, with at least 62 people killed in Uttar Pradesh following three days of intense rainfall.
State authorities said at least 46 people were injured and more than 1,000 houses damaged as floodwaters affected several districts.
Schools were ordered closed in parts of Uttar Pradesh, including the state capital, Lucknow, as emergency personnel continued evacuating residents from vulnerable communities.
Authorities urged residents to restrict unnecessary movement in flooded areas and avoid fast-flowing rivers, streams and drainage channels while emergency operations continued.
Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, said rainfall was expected to ease as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakened.
However, parts of eastern and western Uttar Pradesh could continue experiencing light rainfall through Tuesday.
Neighbouring Odisha State has also been affected, with authorities evacuating more than 75,000 residents from vulnerable communities to safer locations.
Emergency officials continued monitoring water levels and weather conditions as authorities worked to prevent further casualties.
NEPAL RECORDS 21 DEATHS
In Nepal, at least 21 people were killed in weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday, according to the country’s disaster management authorities.
Five people were reported missing, while another five sustained injuries.
Floods and landslides also damaged at least 194 houses, adding to the destruction caused by previous extreme weather events in the country.
Nepal has experienced repeated flooding and landslides during periods of intense rainfall, leaving vulnerable communities facing continuing risks from unstable terrain and overflowing waterways.
Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain alert as emergency teams continue assessing damage.
THOUSANDS EVACUATED IN THAILAND
Thailand has also been severely affected, with widespread flooding reported across dozens of provinces following intense rainfall.
Thousands of residents have moved into evacuation centres in Bangkok after weekend rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems and inundated several neighbourhoods.
More than 80,000 residents in flooded areas were reportedly unable to leave their homes, prompting emergency authorities to deploy boats and mobile kitchens to assist affected communities.
Thailand’s Interior Ministry said at least eight people had died in flooding across 41 provinces since September 16, while more than 580,000 homes had been affected.
Authorities in Bangkok said 5,901 residents had moved into 234 evacuation centres as emergency operations continued.
Parts of the Thai capital reportedly received more than 12 inches of rainfall within two or three days, close to the city’s average rainfall for the entire month of September.
In Rayong province, east of Bangkok, authorities ordered evacuations after rising floodwaters pushed two reservoirs beyond their capacity.
ECONOMIC LOSSES FEARED
Beyond the humanitarian impact, the flooding is also threatening economic activity in Thailand.
Economist Aat Pisanwanich of Rangsit University estimated that nationwide economic losses could reach at least 11 billion baht, approximately $327 million.
He projected that the flooding could reduce Thailand’s annual economic growth by about 0.3 percentage points to 2.1 per cent and lower third-quarter growth by approximately 0.5 percentage points to 1.7 per cent.
Bangkok and Thailand’s eastern region are expected to experience significant disruption, particularly to wholesale and retail activities, while agriculture and industrial operations could also be affected in other parts of the country.
Emergency authorities across India, Nepal and Thailand are continuing rescue, evacuation and relief operations as weather agencies monitor rainfall and flood conditions.
Residents in vulnerable communities have been advised to follow official evacuation instructions and weather warnings as authorities work to limit further loss of life and property.
