Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappé suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee while representing France in their UEFA Nations League victory over Türkiye.
The Spanish giants announced the diagnosis following medical examinations conducted after the France captain returned to Madrid.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee,” the club said.
Real Madrid added that Mbappé’s recovery remained subject to further assessment.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury during France’s 1-0 victory over Türkiye on Friday, September 25.
Mbappé scored the only goal of the encounter in the 55th minute before experiencing discomfort in his left knee shortly afterwards.
He initially attempted to continue but was eventually replaced by Désiré Doué before the hour mark.
The injury overshadowed an otherwise positive start for France under new head coach Zinedine Zidane, who recorded victory in his first match in charge of the national team.
Following the match, Zidane confirmed that Mbappé would leave the France camp and return to Madrid for further assessment.
The forward subsequently underwent examinations by Real Madrid’s medical staff, which established the nature of the injury.
Real Madrid did not provide an official timetable for his return.
However, reports in Spain indicate that Mbappé could be sidelined for approximately two weeks, depending on how his knee responds to treatment and rehabilitation.
His injury means he will miss France’s remaining fixtures during the current international window.
Attention will now turn to whether Mbappé can recover in time for Real Madrid’s fixtures following the international break.
The club is expected to continue monitoring his condition before determining when he can return to training and competitive action.
