Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has signalled Tehran’s readiness to return to a June memorandum of understanding with the United States, as renewed diplomatic contacts continue amid the conflict between the two countries.
Pezeshkian said Friday that Iran welcomed China’s support for reviving the understanding and stressed the importance of returning to the framework.
The agreement, reached in Islamabad in June, was intended to provide a framework for further negotiations between Washington and Tehran, but subsequent escalation disrupted diplomatic efforts.
Pezeshkian’s latest remarks follow renewed diplomatic contacts on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner participated in talks this week, although accounts have differed over whether all the discussions were direct or conducted through mediators.
Despite the renewed contacts, significant differences remain between Washington and Tehran over the conditions required to end the conflict.
A senior Iranian official said earlier this week that the two countries remained far apart but maintained that diplomatic efforts should continue.
Pezeshkian had adopted a firmer tone during his address to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, saying Iran would not yield to US pressure.
His latest remarks, however, indicate Tehran remains open to negotiations based on the earlier understanding.
Iran has also linked progress in negotiations to US actions, including demands concerning sanctions, military pressure and restrictions affecting Iranian ports.
No new agreement has been announced, and negotiations over a broader settlement remain ongoing.
