Super Eagles debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored on their first senior appearances as Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on Friday.
Madagascar stunned the hosts by taking the lead in the 16th minute, putting Eric Chelle’s side under early pressure at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Nigeria responded just before half-time when Ilenikhena struck in stoppage time to restore parity and mark his Super Eagles debut with a goal.
The comeback was completed in the 65th minute when fellow debutant Usor found the net to put Nigeria ahead.
Ilenikhena had received his first senior invitation for the September qualifiers following his performances at club level, while Usor was also handed an opportunity to make his mark in Chelle’s squad.
Their goals ensured Nigeria avoided a repeat of their last meeting with Madagascar at the Africa Cup of Nations, when the Barea stunned the Super Eagles 2-0 in 2019.
The victory gives Nigeria three points from their opening Group L fixture and a winning start to their qualification campaign.
The Super Eagles will next travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29 as they continue their push for a place at the 2027 AFCON.
