The Bauchi State Police Command has detained 27 suspects over alleged murder, rape, kidnapping, drug trafficking and other offences recorded across the state in the past three weeks.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this during a news conference in Bauchi on Thursday, saying the arrests followed a series of operations targeting violent and other crimes.
Habib said the operations also led to the recovery of motorcycles, suspected counterfeit currencies, narcotics and other items.
According to him, two suspects were arrested on September 21 at Sharfolli village in Atafowa District of Itas/Gadau Local Government Area after they were allegedly found with 69 parcels of marijuana.
Police also impounded a Sharon bus allegedly used to transport the substances.
In another operation, four suspects were detained on September 20 over the alleged killing of 45-year-old Garba Abdullahi at Dunari village in Gadau District.
Habib said the suspects allegedly accused Abdullahi of witchcraft and attacked him while he was returning from his farm. He was later taken to General Hospital, Azare, where a medical doctor confirmed his death.
The command also arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged killing of a 29-year-old commercial motorcycle rider, Abdulrahman Nuru, in the Bundot area of Dass Local Government Area on September 4.
According to the police, the incident triggered a reprisal attack involving youths from Bundot and Bayan Fada, resulting in a clash near Dass Central Motor Park.
A 38-year-old resident of Bayan Fada, identified as Mukhtar Jibrin, was reportedly killed during the violence. Police said normalcy had since been restored to the area.
Habib further disclosed that a 53-year-old man was arrested for allegedly robbing and sexually assaulting more than 40 women in Bauchi metropolis.
The suspect allegedly disguised himself as a commercial motorcycle rider to lure victims.
Police said items recovered in connection with the case included a motorcycle, 15 mobile phones, three power banks, six wristwatches, clothing items, ₦425,435 and foreign currencies.
Two other suspects were detained over allegations of sexually assaulting three minors at Lanzai village in Darazo Local Government Area. Police said the survivors were referred to General Hospital, Darazo, for medical examination.
In Gamawa Local Government Area, two suspects were arrested over the alleged vandalism of electrical infrastructure valued at more than ₦1.2 million.
Police said about 150 metres of aluminium conductor wire was recovered during the operation.
The command also arrested two suspected kidnappers while they were allegedly attempting to collect a ₦1.5 million ransom from a victim’s family at Tallaran in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
Other arrests involved allegations of theft, attempted robbery, conspiracy, cheating and circulation of counterfeit United States dollars.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu commended officers involved in the operations and condemned jungle justice, reprisal attacks, killings linked to witchcraft accusations, sexual violence, drug trafficking, vandalism and circulation of counterfeit currency.
Aliyu directed that investigations into the cases be completed and suspects found culpable prosecuted in accordance with the law.
