The National Examinations Council has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination, with 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent of those who sat for the examination, obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
The figure marks a 2.64 percentage-point decline from the 60.26 per cent recorded in the 2025 examination, when 818,492 candidates achieved the same benchmark.
The NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday during a press conference in Minna, Niger State, 63 days after the final paper of the examination was written.
Wushishi said 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 examination, while 1,371,992 eventually sat for the exercise, which was conducted between June 15 and July 23.
He disclosed that 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, obtained five credits and above without considering their performances in English Language and Mathematics.
The registrar also reported a significant reduction in examination malpractice during the 2026 exercise.
According to him, 1,406 candidates were involved in reported cases of malpractice, representing a 64.74 per cent decrease from the 3,878 candidates recorded in 2025.
Wushishi attributed the decline to measures introduced by the council to improve the monitoring and overall conduct of the examination.
He commended security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services, for their support, vigilance and presence throughout the exercise.
He said the agencies contributed to maintaining discipline, deterring examination malpractice and safeguarding the credibility of the examination process.
The NECO registrar also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for reappointing him for a second term and to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, for the confidence placed in his leadership.
Wushishi assured candidates, parents, schools and other stakeholders that NECO would continue to uphold the integrity of its examinations and remain committed to fulfilling its statutory responsibilities.
