Two people have been killed after suspected bandits attacked Dukura community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The attackers also reportedly rustled livestock and stole motorcycles belonging to residents during the incident, which occurred on Monday.

According to reports, the bandits blocked the road linking Dukura and neighbouring communities to Tambuwal market before carrying out the attack.

The assailants were said to have taken away cows, camels and sheep, as well as motorcycles belonging to some commercial motorcycle operators.

The attack reportedly caused panic in Dukura, Dalijan and other communities in Girkau Ward, including Zugu, Indire, Mazoji, Tungar Kabawa, Runtuwa, Jabga and Sabon Garin Zugu.

Confirming the incident, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the command received information about the attack and immediately deployed personnel to the area.

Rufai said the police engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat.

“Immediately we got the information, our men moved to the area and engaged the bandits in gunshots, forcing them to retreat,” he said.

The police spokesperson, however, confirmed that two people had already been killed before security personnel arrived.

“Unfortunately, before the arrival of the police, the bandits had already killed two people and made away with some animals,” he added.

Rufai said the police were working to establish further details about the attack while efforts were being made to strengthen security in the affected communities.

The latest incident comes amid continued attacks by suspected bandits in parts of Sokoto State.

Recently, no fewer than 10 people were reportedly killed while several others sustained injuries when suspected bandits attacked Tofa community in Rabah Local Government Area of the state.

Local sources also reported that between 38 and 40 residents were abducted during the attack.
