The United States has reportedly denied visas to some members of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s delegation scheduled to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
Iranian state media reported the development on Monday, describing the decision as a move targeting members of the president’s high-level delegation, including personnel from his communications team.
According to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, the affected officials were denied entry visas ahead of Pezeshkian’s planned appearance at the UN General Assembly.
The Mehr news agency, citing a spokesperson for the Iranian presidency, also reported the visa denials and said Pezeshkian is expected to address the General Assembly on Wednesday.
Pezeshkian’s planned visit would make him the highest-ranking Iranian official to travel to the United States since the conflict between Iran and Israel, involving US military action, began in February.
The United States has reportedly authorised the Iranian delegation to attend the UN General Assembly but has imposed restrictions on members of the delegation.
The US State Department said on Thursday that members of the Iranian delegation would face restrictions on certain purchases, including luxury goods, during their stay.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is expected to be part of the delegation, left Iran on Sunday evening for Qatar, where he was scheduled to make a stopover.
Iran has also said it conveyed conditions to the United States, through Qatar as a mediator, for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key international route for oil and gas shipments.
The developments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict and regional security.
