The National Association of Nigerian Students has commended President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Works David Umahi over the ongoing construction of the 69.4-kilometre Northern Bypass in Kano State, saying the project could improve movement for students and other commuters across the North-West.
NANS President Akinteye Afeez said in a statement on Friday that the association reached its position after a delegation inspected the project as part of its nationwide assessment of federal roads providing access to tertiary institutions.
According to Afeez, the bypass connects routes serving 10 institutions in the region and is particularly important to students travelling through Kano and neighbouring states.
He said students had previously reported severe traffic congestion along routes through Kano while travelling between states and their respective campuses.
NANS said completion of the bypass was expected to reduce pressure on roads within Kano metropolis while providing an alternative route for interstate traffic.
“We therefore commend President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for the ongoing project,” Afeez said.
69.4KM ROAD, THREE FLYOVERS, SEVEN BRIDGES
According to NANS, the project comprises a 69.4-kilometre dual carriageway, three flyovers and seven bridges.
The association said its delegation was satisfied with the pace and quality of construction observed during the inspection.
Afeez also praised the Federal Government for considering access to tertiary institutions in road infrastructure planning, arguing that improved transportation links could ease the difficulties faced by students travelling to campuses.
NANS further commended the payment of compensation to farmers whose agricultural land was acquired for the bypass project, saying compensation was important in addressing the impact of construction on affected communities and livelihoods.
The association, however, urged the Federal Government to maintain the pace of construction and ensure the project is completed without unnecessary delay.
“We therefore call on the government to intensify efforts and ensure that this road project is completed in earnest,” Afeez said.
The commendation reflects NANS’ assessment following its inspection of the project, as the association continues its nationwide tour of federal road projects affecting access to tertiary institutions.
