The Kebbi State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to harmonise the collection of taxes and levies across the state.
The legislation, titled the Kebbi State Harmonised Taxes and Levies Collection Bill, was passed on Thursday after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the Committee of the Whole.
The sitting was presided over by the Speaker, Salihu Maikasuwa Dangoje, who was represented by the House Leader, Faruk Aliyu Nasarawa Jega.
If assented to by the governor, the law is expected to strengthen the state’s tax administration and improve the efficiency of internally generated revenue collection.
The proposed framework is also aimed at reducing revenue leakages by establishing a more coordinated system for collecting taxes and levies across Kebbi.
Speaking to journalists after the passage, the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Adamu Muhammad Birnin Yauri, said the legislation would introduce a more modern and efficient approach to revenue collection.
He said the bill would help reduce cash-based transactions, improve transparency and accountability, and provide a uniform framework for the administration and collection of taxes and levies in the state.
The lawmaker added that the harmonisation would make the revenue collection process more organised while helping the state address gaps that have contributed to losses in internally generated revenue.
The bill will now require the governor’s assent before it can become law.
