The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered the immediate suspension of the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Suberu Aniviye, following the deaths of suspected illegal miners after their arrest in the state.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo also ordered a full investigation into the incident, which reportedly occurred at the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna.
The suspected illegal miners were arrested during NSCDC enforcement operations conducted in parts of Niger State on September 15 and 16, 2026.
Tunji-Ojo said the commandant would remain suspended while the circumstances surrounding the deaths are investigated.
He described the incident as unfortunate and urged the public to remain calm while authorities conduct a transparent inquiry. He also expressed condolences to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the families of the deceased.
DEATH TOLL NOT OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED
Reports have put the number of deaths at no fewer than 33, although the NSCDC has not officially confirmed a specific figure.
The corps had earlier constituted an investigative team headed by its Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation.
The probe will focus on the detainees’ condition at the time of arrest, their treatment and conditions in custody, medical attention provided and the circumstances leading to their deaths.
The NSCDC has cautioned against speculation over the cause, saying any claims about a particular disease or medical condition remain subject to medical and laboratory confirmation.
Aniviye’s suspension is an administrative measure pending the outcome of the investigation and does not establish responsibility for the deaths.
