Chaos broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Tuesday as rival factions of the party clashed, forcing police to fire teargas to restore order.

The unrest began when Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State arrived at the party headquarters alongside the faction led by the newly elected PDP National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki. Their presence reportedly sparked confrontations with supporters aligned with Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s faction, who attempted to block their entry.

Security personnel loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the two governors were involved in a standoff over control of the Secretariat, with teargas deployed to disperse the crowds.

Governor Makinde and Governor Mohammed eventually entered the venue with the newly elected National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, while Nyesom Wike remained with Samuel Anyanwu, the embattled national secretary, choosing to stay in his car for over 30 minutes before alighting.

Speaking to journalists later, Makinde and Mohammed recounted the resistance from Anyanwu supporters and the deployment of teargas by police amid the tense standoff.

Further updates on the situation will follow.
