The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested nine suspects over the alleged vandalism and theft of roofing materials from Tsageru Primary School in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The suspects were arrested following allegations of criminal conspiracy, vandalism, mischief and theft, the NSCDC said on Monday.
They were paraded at the command’s headquarters in Gusau by the Head of Public Relations, ASCI Umar Mohammad, who said the suspects had allegedly confessed to their involvement in the offences.
Mohammad said the investigation began after the Educational Secretary of Tsafe Local Government Area, Abdulrahman Aliyu, lodged a complaint through the NSCDC Divisional Corps Office.
According to him, one of the suspects, Haruna Amadu of Tsageru village, was arrested on September 8, 2026, at about 3:02pm.
His arrest, the spokesman said, led investigators to eight other suspects allegedly connected to the incident.
The suspects were identified as Haruna Amadu, Aliyu Aliyu, Isah Umar, Hassan Shehu, Garba Ibrahim, Ibrahim Lawali, Abdullahi Usman, Abubakar Ibrahim and Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu.
Mohammad said preliminary findings indicated that the alleged vandalism took place between September 5 and September 8.
He alleged that the suspects conspired to remove roofing sheets from the school and attempted to secure the cooperation of traditional rulers by offering them bribes.
The District Head, Sarkin Gabas Aliyu, and Village Head, Magaji Kabiru Salisu, reportedly rejected the alleged offer and warned the suspects against carrying out the plan.
The NSCDC spokesman further said the suspects allegedly admitted that the operation was conducted without the knowledge or approval of the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (ZSUBEB).
He said the suspects intended to sell the roofing materials or use the proceeds to pay levies required to gain access to farmlands during the farming season.
The vandalism reportedly affected three classrooms, with the estimated value of the damage put at N4.5 million.
Mohammad reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and combating vandalism, theft and other criminal activities that could undermine the development of the state.
He added that the suspects would remain under investigation and would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
