Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested a man in connection with the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, whose body was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant house last month.
According to reports gathered, Fortune, a mother of four, was discovered dead on August 3, with police initially describing her body as being found in a hanging position.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said on Friday that the medical examiner had classified Fortune’s death as a homicide following an autopsy that was conducted after she was brought down from the tree.

She said investigators moved quickly after receiving the determination and obtained two search warrants as well as an arrest warrant before taking the suspect into custody on Friday afternoon.
Police said the suspect had an association with Fortune but did not disclose further details about their relationship.
Brackney said additional arrests were possible as investigators continued examining evidence in the case.
The police chief also acknowledged the wider public concern surrounding the case, particularly given Mississippi’s history of racial violence.

“We do have a responsibility to make sure that what we say publicly is supported by our evidence and facts,” she said.
Police have not disclosed how Fortune died or provided further details about the circumstances surrounding her death. The investigation remains ongoing.
