Russia has launched fresh strikes on industrial facilities and cargo vessels across Ukraine, as both sides intensify attacks on critical infrastructure more than four years after Moscow’s invasion.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Saturday that its forces struck the Zaporizhstal steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, as well as an Interpipe Steel complex in Dnipro and several industrial facilities in Kryvyi Rih.
The ministry also said two cargo vessels were hit overnight at the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk.
The reported attacks followed Ukrainian drone strikes on industrial facilities in Russia’s Samara region. Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed its forces intercepted 230 Ukrainian drones overnight across more than a dozen Russian regions, as well as over Crimea and the Azov and Black seas.
Togliatti Mayor Ilya Sukhikh said several residential buildings were damaged in the attacks and one person was injured. In Taganrog, in the Rostov region, four commercial properties were reportedly set ablaze.
The latest strikes form part of a wider campaign by both countries against each other’s industrial and energy infrastructure.
Since the start of the war in February 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power network, defence facilities and logistics infrastructure, while Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to strike Russian oil refineries and other industrial sites in an effort to disrupt Moscow’s war economy.
The renewed attacks have also caused civilian casualties.
At least two people were killed in Russian strikes on petrol stations in Kyiv on Friday, while further attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions killed three people, according to local officials.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 12 people, including a 12-year-old boy, were injured in the capital. Another person was killed in the surrounding Kyiv region.
Ukrainian drone attacks also caused deaths in Russia. Local officials reported one person killed in the Kursk region and another in Belgorod. Two employees of a gas company were also reportedly killed in a drone strike in Russian-controlled parts of the Donetsk region.
In Volgograd, Russian authorities said two people were injured after a Ukrainian missile struck two residential buildings and damaged an industrial facility.
Neither side has indicated any immediate reduction in its attacks, with industrial, energy and logistics infrastructure remaining key targets in the continuing conflict.
