The Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has questioned the persistence of insecurity in Nigeria, arguing that modern technology should make it easier for authorities to track criminals and protect citizens.
Obi spoke in an interview while discussing how his administration would tackle kidnapping, ransom demands and other security challenges if elected.
The former Anambra State governor said technological capabilities that can identify the location of individuals should be deployed more effectively in the fight against crime.
“In today’s world, you can know where people are,” Obi said.
He questioned why resources and surveillance equipment allegedly used to monitor political opponents could not instead be directed towards tracking criminals.
Obi said he would not use government resources to pursue political opponents if elected, but would focus on addressing security threats and protecting Nigerians.
He also expressed concern over the continued occurrence of kidnappings despite advances in technology, saying the situation suggested that something was wrong with the country’s security response.
The NDC candidate called for more effective use of available technology and resources to combat criminal activities and improve the safety of Nigerians.
