US President Donald Trump has promised to issue a $5,000 “dividend” payment to every adult American citizen if Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in November’s midterm elections.
Trump pledged during his speech at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention, describing the proposed payment as a reward linked to what he called the country’s economic strength and success under Republican leadership.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said.
The president said the only condition attached to the proposed dividend was that the money must be spent within the United States.
However, details on how the programme would be funded, the timeline for payment, and whether congressional approval would be required were not immediately provided.
The proposal could cost more than $1 trillion, with estimates placing the total cost at about $1.2 trillion depending on the number of eligible adults.
The announcement comes as Republicans seek to maintain control of Congress during the November midterm elections, with Trump using the convention to rally support for the party’s candidates.
Economic analysts have raised questions about the financial impact of such a large-scale payment, including possible effects on government spending, inflation and the national deficit.
Trump previously promoted other dividend-style payment proposals, but the latest announcement represents his most direct pledge to provide a nationwide payment to American adults.
