Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have expressed surprise over a recent communication from King Charles confirming that they remain non-working members of the British royal family and cannot use the titles of His and Her Royal Highness.
The couple, through their spokesperson, said they were not informed about the decision before the announcement was communicated to them and other relevant officials.
The King’s letter, sent to Harry and Meghan as well as government and military officials, reportedly clarified that the couple would continue to be treated as private citizens and would not resume official royal duties despite their return to the United Kingdom.
The decision maintains the arrangement established after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their roles as senior working royals in January 2020.
Harry and Meghan had announced at the time that they intended to become financially independent while continuing to support the monarchy and divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America.
Their move away from official royal duties led to major changes in their relationship with the institution, although they have remained connected to the royal family through personal ties.
The couple have since welcomed two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who have reportedly begun schooling in the United Kingdom after spending most of their early years in California.
Royal officials have maintained that while Harry and Meghan are welcomed on a personal level, their status as non-working royals remains unchanged.
The latest development comes amid renewed public attention on the Sussexes following their return to Britain and speculation about their future relationship with the royal family.
