Two people were killed and at least 10 others injured after Russia launched a wave of missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine early Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attacks came shortly after a brief lull in Russian strikes over the weekend, coinciding with a visit to Kyiv by US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff as Washington renewed efforts to broker an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Air Force said the main targets were Kyiv and the southern Odesa region. It reported that Ukrainian forces intercepted or suppressed two ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles and 142 drones, while strikes were recorded at 29 locations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the overnight assault as a complex operation that appeared deliberately designed to inflict maximum damage.
According to Mr Zelenskyy, Russian forces used a combination of ballistic and cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles and Shahed drones.
He said residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure in Kyiv sustained significant damage.
The strikes also affected several other regions.
In Odesa, a market was reportedly hit, while two people were injured and a multi-storey building was damaged in Kharkiv, Mr Zelenskyy said.
A train locomotive travelling on the Kyiv-Sumy route was also attacked at a railway station in the Sumy region. Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions also came under attack.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said fires and damage were reported in at least five districts of Kyiv, while the Kyiv City Military Administration said civilian infrastructure was affected at no fewer than 16 locations.
A 26-storey non-residential building in the Holosiivskyi district was damaged, while a separate fire spread to another nearby non-residential structure.
Emergency responders rescued one person during a search operation and evacuated two others from an apartment in a 16-storey residential building.
In the Solomianskyi district, people were trapped inside a five-storey residential building. The emergency service said at least 10 people were rescued, while fires were also reported in the Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts.
A Kyiv resident, Iryna Barisenkova, 61, said she heard explosions while travelling on public transport and was informed of a major fire near the Darnytskyi Vehicle Repair Plant area on the city’s left bank.
“Everything was thundering on the left bank,” she said, describing the attack as “brutal.”
Ms Barisenkova said the relative calm during the previous two nights, when Mr Witkoff and Mr Kushner were in Kyiv, had allowed residents to get some rest.
“We got some rest, thanks to them,” she said, adding that she hoped the US envoys would visit more often if their presence could help reduce Russian attacks.
