The United Kingdom is expected to announce a trade ban on goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, Pensions Minister Pat McFadden has said.
Mr McFadden disclosed this in an interview with Times Radio, saying the UK foreign secretary would announce it in Parliament later on Tuesday.
He said the proposed measure was part of efforts to prevent the prospect of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict from being undermined.
“The foreign secretary will make a statement to Parliament later today,” Mr McFadden said, adding that the policy was aimed at protecting the possibility of achieving a two-state solution.
The announcement comes amid a tougher approach to Israel by the UK government since Prime Minister Andy Burnham assumed office in July.
Mr Burnham has acknowledged the political importance of the Israel-Palestine conflict to voters in the country.
Two months ago, he apologised for the Labour Party’s initial response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, admitting that “we got it wrong.”
The proposed trade restriction on settlement-produced goods would add to the UK government’s recent measures and statements concerning Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.
