Federal investigators have arrived in South Florida to determine the cause of a deadly incident involving an Amazon cargo plane that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
The aircraft reportedly overshot the runway, crossed into a nearby Miami-Dade street and burst into flames, killing five people and injuring five others.
Witnesses have begun sharing accounts of the moments surrounding the crash. Grace Mercado, who was travelling in a vehicle with her partner near the airport, said they heard a loud noise before her partner realised a plane had crashed.
She said she looked up from her phone and saw the aircraft had left the runway, creating a scene she described as extremely loud and difficult to comprehend.
“The plane was up in smoke,” Mercado said, describing the incident as something that appeared unreal.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reporting that more than 60 units and about 200 personnel were deployed to the scene. Officials said the first responders arrived within seconds of receiving the emergency call.
Authorities confirmed that five people died in the incident, while five others sustained injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading investigations into the circumstances that caused the aircraft to leave the runway and crash.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and said officials were supporting those affected by the incident.
Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight data, weather conditions and other operational factors as part of efforts to establish the cause of the crash.
