A political action committee aligned with US President Donald Trump has earmarked $10 million for advertising in the Texas Senate race, according to a filing submitted to the Federal Election Commission.
MAGA Inc., Trump’s super PAC, plans to spend the money on television and digital advertisements targeting Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, a state representative.
The planned expenditure comes amid growing pressure from Republicans for Trump’s political organisation to become more active in the 2026 midterm elections, particularly in Texas, where Republicans are seeking to retain the Senate seat.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton emerged as the Republican nominee after defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the party’s primary. Trump had backed Paxton during the contest.
The outcome has generated concern among some Republican lawmakers and strategists, who believe Paxton could face a tougher general election campaign than Cornyn because of controversies surrounding his political career.
Paxton was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House in 2023 over allegations including bribery and abuse of public trust. He was subsequently acquitted by the state Senate following his impeachment trial.
His political challenges were compounded last year when his wife, state Senator Angela Paxton, announced that she had filed for divorce, citing “biblical grounds” and referring to what she described as recent discoveries without providing further details.
The controversies have raised concerns among some Texas Republicans about Paxton’s prospects in the statewide election as the party seeks to protect its majorities in Congress.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has urged Trump’s political operation to increase its spending in Texas, describing the race as critical to Republican efforts to retain control of the Senate.
Thune estimated that television advertising in the state could cost about $8 million per week.
“Their resources need to be brought to bear on Texas because it’s not one that we can lose if we’re going to hang on to a Republican majority,” Thune said during an appearance on Fox News.
The call came amid concerns among some Republicans that Trump had not been sufficiently active in campaigning for candidates ahead of the midterms.
However, Trump said on Wednesday that he intended to campaign for Republican candidates, including Paxton, ahead of the November elections.
“We’re going to go to Texas and work for Ken Paxton, who’s a great guy,” Trump told reporters.
Trump also defended Paxton following his previous comments about the attorney general’s appearance, saying Paxton’s record in office was more important than his personal style.
MAGA Inc. had more than $400 million in cash as of July 31, according to its latest fundraising report.
The organisation recently began airing nationwide television advertisements promoting Trump’s policy agenda.
Trump said on Friday that he planned to deploy between $400 million and $500 million from the super PAC’s funds to support Republican candidates during the midterm elections.
“I think I have, like, close to a billion dollars in the super PAC, and I’m allocating probably $400 or $500 million,” Trump said.
He added that the money would be directed towards Republican candidates he believes have strong prospects of winning or are in competitive races.
