Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly considering using Malo Gusto more frequently in midfield after the French defender remained at Stamford Bridge despite late transfer interest from Liverpool.

The 23-year-old was the subject of a surprise deadline-day approach from Liverpool, who were believed to be interested in securing his services on a loan deal. However, Chelsea rejected the proposal and decided to keep the player as part of Alonso’s plans for the season.

Gusto, primarily known as a right-back, has shown versatility since joining Chelsea and could now be given more opportunities in a central midfield role under the Spanish coach.

Alonso is said to value the Frenchman’s technical ability, athleticism and tactical flexibility, qualities that could allow him to contribute in different areas of the pitch.

The decision to retain Gusto comes as Chelsea continue to build their squad around players capable of operating in multiple positions, with Alonso looking to create greater competition within the team.

Liverpool’s late interest highlighted the growing reputation of Gusto, who has developed into an important member of Chelsea’s squad since arriving from French side Lyon.

The French international will now focus on competing for regular playing time as Chelsea prepare for the remainder of the Premier League campaign.
