Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for national unity as his government faces increasing economic pressure from the United States and growing concerns over public dissatisfaction.
Pezeshkian said Iran’s cohesion would help the country withstand what he described as efforts by foreign adversaries to create divisions and unrest.
The remarks came after Washington announced a new wave of economic sanctions targeting Tehran, described by US officials as a major effort to restrict financial networks supporting the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Speaking to officials on Friday, Pezeshkian said sanctions, conflict and external pressure were aimed at weakening internal stability, adding that unity among Iranians was necessary to counter such challenges.
The Iranian leader acknowledged the difficult economic conditions facing citizens, warning that additional pressure on households could increase public frustration. His administration, however, confirmed plans to adjust fuel pricing measures, including increasing the cost of one category of petrol quotas and reducing monthly allocations.
Iran continues to face energy challenges linked to fuel smuggling, damaged infrastructure and high fuel consumption, while inflation and rising living costs have placed further strain on households.
The country’s currency reportedly fell to a new low against the US dollar, adding to economic concerns amid ongoing tensions with Washington.
The latest economic measures come as military tensions between Iran and the United States continue, with both sides involved in a broader confrontation that has affected regional security and trade.
Iranian authorities have also raised concerns about possible internal unrest, accusing foreign powers of attempting to encourage protests. Officials, including security and judicial leaders, have warned against actions they consider threats to national security.
The Iranian government has maintained that it will resist external pressure while pursuing measures aimed at stabilising the economy and maintaining domestic order.
