Britain’s new car market recorded its ninth consecutive month of growth in August, with vehicle registrations rising significantly compared with the same period last year, according to industry data.

New car registrations increased by 13.7 per cent year-on-year to 94,236 vehicles in August, despite the month traditionally being one of the quieter periods for vehicle sales in the United Kingdom. The rise was driven largely by stronger demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), whose registrations climbed 27.7 per cent compared with the previous year.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said attention is now shifting to September, a month that usually records stronger sales because many buyers delay purchases until the introduction of new vehicle registration identifiers.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said August figures should be viewed cautiously because of the month’s traditionally low sales volume, adding that September would provide a clearer indication of the strength of market demand.

The growth comes as the British government reviews its zero-emission vehicle targets, which require manufacturers to increase the share of electric vehicles sold as part of efforts to phase out new petrol and diesel vehicles.

Data from industry analysts also showed continued growth in electric vehicle adoption, with battery electric cars accounting for about 30 per cent of new vehicle registrations in August, although different organisations use varying methods of calculating market shares.

The increase in electric vehicle sales reflects changing consumer preferences and growing efforts by manufacturers to encourage a transition towards cleaner vehicle technologies.

Industry observers said September sales figures will be closely monitored as they are expected to provide a more accurate assessment of consumer confidence and the overall direction of the UK automotive market.
