Iranian mourners have buried victims of a reported U.S. airstrike that allegedly hit a wedding gathering, as tensions between Tehran and Washington intensified after Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting a U.S. base in Kuwait.
The funeral was held on Thursday in Kuhestak, Sirik County, along the Strait of Hormuz coastline, where Iranian officials said a U.S. strike on a residential area during a wedding ceremony killed civilians and injured dozens of others. Iranian authorities later reported that the death toll from the incident had risen to five after a woman died in hospital.
The United States military said it was aware of the reports but maintained that its forces do not target civilians. Washington said its recent air operations were aimed at military sites linked to Iranian activities in the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the strikes, Iran launched missiles and drones towards a U.S. military base in Kuwait, with Kuwaiti authorities saying their air defence systems intercepted the incoming threats. The exchange marked the most significant escalation in the conflict in more than a month.
Iranian officials said the U.S. bombardment killed 18 people across the country, while the strikes triggered renewed fears of a wider regional confrontation involving Gulf states. The escalation also contributed to rising global oil prices, with Brent crude futures moving above $96 per barrel amid concerns over disruptions to energy supplies.
The latest developments came after a period of relative calm in August following earlier fighting between the two sides. However, both countries have continued to exchange accusations, with Washington demanding an end to attacks on shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran has accused the U.S. of escalating the conflict.
Regional governments have expressed concern over the growing tensions, as the conflict threatens to spread beyond Iran and the United States into neighbouring countries hosting foreign military facilities.
Authorities on both sides have continued to monitor the situation as diplomatic efforts remain limited and fears of further military confrontation persist.
