United States President, Donald Trump on Thursday awarded the nation’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honour, to retired Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr. and posthumously to retired Colonel John W. Ripley during a ceremony held at the White House.

The prestigious award was presented in recognition of extraordinary acts of heroism and conspicuous gallantry displayed by both servicemen during the Vietnam War.

Major Capers received the Medal of Honour following the upgrade of his Silver Star, which had previously recognised his bravery during a combat mission in 1967. The award acknowledges his exceptional courage and leadership while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam.

Colonel Ripley was posthumously honoured after his Navy Cross was upgraded to the Medal of Honour. Ripley was recognised for his remarkable heroism during intense combat operations in 1972, where his actions significantly contributed to military operations during the Vietnam War.

Speaking during the ceremony at the White House, President Trump paid tribute to the two decorated veterans, describing their service and sacrifice as enduring examples of patriotism, courage, and dedication to the United States.

The Medal of Honour is the highest military award bestowed by the United States government and is reserved for service members who distinguish themselves through acts of valour above and beyond the call of duty.

The ceremony drew military officials, veterans, family members, and dignitaries who gathered to celebrate the legacy and sacrifices of the two war heroes.

Capers’ recognition marks the culmination of years of advocacy to ensure his actions received the nation’s highest military honour, while Ripley’s posthumous award further cements his legacy as one of the most respected combat leaders of the Vietnam War era.
