Barcelona have confirmed the departure of teenage forward Toni Fernandez after reaching an agreement with Italian club Venezia for the player’s transfer.
The move brings an end to Fernandez’s eight-year association with Barcelona, where he progressed through the club’s renowned La Masia academy before making his senior debut.
Barcelona stated that the agreement includes a future buy-back option for the Spanish forward, while the Catalan club will also retain a percentage of any future transfer fee involving the player.
Venezia confirmed that the deal was initially structured as a loan move, with a mandatory purchase clause that will be activated once specific conditions are met.
Reports indicate that the Italian club will complete a permanent transfer for €4 million if Fernandez makes three appearances for the team.
The 18-year-old joined Barcelona’s academy from Espanyol in 2018 and rose through the youth ranks before earning his first-team opportunity.
Fernandez made his Barcelona debut on January 4, 2025, during a Copa del Rey match against Barbastro, replacing Pablo Torre as a substitute.
At 16 years, five months and 17 days, he became the second-youngest player to feature for Barcelona’s first team in the 21st century, behind only Lamine Yamal.
The forward later received another opportunity under former Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who handed him a starting role against Girona, although he was substituted at half-time.
Despite making only two senior appearances for Barcelona, Fernandez has been regarded as one of the promising talents developed by the club’s academy.
Speaking after completing his move to Venezia, Fernandez said he was attracted by the Italian club’s project and the confidence shown in him.
He expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter in his career and thanked Barcelona for the years spent at the club.
