Rescue teams are continuing operations along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region after a massive collapse of mud and rocks into a river triggered severe flooding in Nepal.
The disaster occurred after a huge wall of debris entered the river system, sending a powerful surge of water, sediment and rocks through affected areas, damaging communities, roads and infrastructure along the border region.
Authorities and emergency workers have intensified search efforts as the difficult mountain terrain, damaged transport links and continuing flood risks complicate rescue operations. Several hydropower project areas in Nepal have become major focus points, with rescue teams working to reach people believed to be trapped in tunnels and damaged facilities.
Nepalese authorities, supported by international teams, are using ground searches, engineering equipment and aerial assistance to locate survivors and recover victims. Chinese rescue teams have also been involved in operations on the Tibet side of the border.
Officials have warned that the scale of the destruction remains significant, with hundreds of people reported dead or missing across Nepal and Tibet following the flooding and landslide.
The disaster has also raised concerns about further flooding risks in the region, as rescue workers continue efforts under challenging weather and geographical conditions.
Authorities are maintaining emergency responses while continuing assessments of damage to communities, infrastructure and hydropower facilities affected by the disaster.
