Police in Switzerland have launched a manhunt after a 22-year-old woman was killed and five others injured in a shooting at a rave event in the northern city of Aarau.

The shooting occurred overnight at an event held near a horse racing track in Aarau, located near Zurich, where a rave continued into the early hours of Sunday.

Police said the woman died at the scene, while the five injured victims — four men and one woman aged between 24 and 27 — were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Authorities said the identity of the suspected attacker, the motive and the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unknown.

Aargau Cantonal Police said officers were alerted to the incident at around 2:30 a.m. local time and immediately launched a major security operation. Several areas around the racing track, swimming pool and sports facilities were cordoned off, with residents urged to avoid the area.

A large number of armed officers, including riot police, were deployed across Aarau and surrounding areas as part of efforts to locate the suspect. An armoured vehicle was also seen in the area, while a Swiss Army helicopter was reported to have conducted aerial surveillance.

Swiss DJ Tekibo, who was performing at the event, described the incident as heartbreaking in a social media post, saying he had lost an important friend and was struggling to process what happened.

Police have appealed to witnesses to provide photographs and video footage from the scene to assist with the investigation.

Aarau, located about 46 kilometres west of Zurich, has a population of approximately 23,000 people.

Switzerland has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe, although fatal shootings remain relatively uncommon. The country has introduced tighter firearms regulations in recent years.
