Barcelona are reportedly considering a surprise swap deal involving left-back Alejandro Balde and Inter Milan defender Federico Dimarco, a move that could trigger further activity among Premier League clubs before the transfer window closes.

The La Liga champions have already made several major additions this summer, including the signings of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri from Manchester City, and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.

The Catalan club have also welcomed back Joao Cancelo as a free agent after he departed from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, while several players have left the squad. Ansu Fati joined Monaco permanently, Ferran Torres moved to Paris Saint-Germain in a reported €45 million deal, and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen joined Ajax on loan for the 2026/27 season.

Balde had been expected to remain at Barcelona despite interest from Manchester United. Reports indicated that his agent, Jorge Mendes, held discussions with the club over the futures of several players, including the 22-year-old defender.

However, Spanish outlet SPORT reported that Barcelona sporting director Deco is exploring a possible swap deal that would see Balde move to Inter Milan, with Dimarco heading in the opposite direction.

Dimarco, 28, has been an important figure for Inter, helping the club secure the Serie A title last season. The left wing-back contributed seven goals and 18 assists during the campaign and remains a key part of the Italian side’s plans.

Inter are reportedly reluctant to sell Dimarco, but discussions between the two clubs have intensified in recent days as Barcelona explore options before the transfer deadline.

A potential deal could have consequences for Manchester United, who are searching for a new left-back. United have already made an enquiry about Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen after difficulties in their pursuit of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall.

Should Barcelona and Inter reach an agreement, Manchester United could return with an improved offer for Maatsen, despite Villa’s reported desire to keep the 24-year-old and offer him a new contract.

Inter have already strengthened their squad with Premier League additions this summer, signing Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur and Curtis Jones from Liverpool, with Spence capable of providing cover if Dimarco leaves.

With the transfer window nearing its conclusion, several clubs across Europe are monitoring developments as Barcelona’s proposed move could create a chain reaction in the market.
