Senator Abdulaziz Yari has warned Nigerians against believing promises by politicians to restore the fuel subsidy regime, describing such commitments as misleading.
Yari, who represents Zamfara West Senatorial District and serves as the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, made the statement on Saturday when members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) paid him a courtesy visit.
The former Zamfara State governor spoke amid renewed debate over petrol subsidy removal and political promises ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
His comments followed a proposal by the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, who said he would introduce a targeted subsidy system if elected president in 2027 while questioning the government’s accountability over savings from the subsidy removal.
Yari said discussions around fuel subsidy had long been a concern among state governors, recalling his time as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, where governors repeatedly demanded accurate fuel consumption data from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
He noted that reliable figures on petrol consumption remained central to discussions surrounding the subsidy policy and its eventual removal.
The senator also said the APC’s campaign strategy for the 2027 election would focus on highlighting the achievements of the current administration and presenting its plans to Nigerians.
