President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, to prioritise the domestic utilisation of the country’s gas resources and eliminate gas flaring.

The President gave the charge when he received members of the NLNG Board, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Adeleye Falade, at the State House, Abuja.

Tinubu said Nigeria must move beyond earning revenue from international gas markets and ensure that its gas resources are converted into economic and environmental benefits for Nigerians.

He specifically urged the NLNG to address gas flaring and develop mechanisms that would make energy more accessible and affordable to domestic consumers.

The President commended the NLNG management for increasing its operational capacity and improving returns on investment, assuring the company of his administration’s readiness to provide incentives necessary to stimulate further growth.

He stressed that Nigeria’s natural resources would have little value unless they were effectively harnessed to serve the economy and improve the welfare of citizens.

Earlier, the NLNG Managing Director, Engineer Adeleye Falade, said the company had generated more than 150 billion dollars since inception, with shareholders, including the Federal Government, receiving about 47 billion dollars in dividends.

Nigeria holds a 49 per cent stake in NLNG.

Falade disclosed that the company had previously operated at about 60 per cent capacity due to inadequate crude oil production, which limited operations to four of its six available production trains.

He said increased crude oil production had enabled the company to raise its operational capacity to five trains, with further improvements expected.

The NLNG boss also disclosed that all liquefied petroleum gas, LPG, production, commonly known as cooking gas, is currently concentrated on the domestic market.

He said the company was preparing to inaugurate Train Seven, which is expected to increase its production capacity by 35 per cent.

Falade noted that NLNG currently accounts for about five per cent of the global LNG market.

He also said the stability in Nigeria’s fiscal environment was attracting increased investment, while commending security agencies and regulators for their role in sustaining stability in the oil and gas sector.

The NLNG chief further disclosed that the Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project, financed by the company, had been completed and was awaiting official commissioning.
