The Head of the Civil Service, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Elsie Peters, has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to establish standard driving schools to ensure comprehensive training for motorists before they obtain driver’s licences.
Mrs Peters made the call in Uyo when the new FRSC Sector Commander in Akwa Ibom, Corps Commander Felicia Kalu, led her team on a courtesy visit to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service.
The HOCS said proper driver training would promote responsible driving and reduce road crashes, stressing that motorists should be equipped with adequate knowledge of driving skills and traffic regulations before being licensed.
She also urged the FRSC to sustain its road safety enlightenment campaigns, particularly on the proper understanding and observance of traffic signs, ahead of the yuletide when vehicular movement usually increases.
Mrs Peters expressed concern over the indiscriminate construction of speed bumps by residents without approval from relevant authorities, warning that the practice could create additional hazards for motorists.
She pledged the support of her office for FRSC programmes, including the training and retraining of government drivers, and said government drivers would be made available whenever such programmes commence.
Earlier, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felicia Kalu, said the visit was to formally introduce herself as the 24th Sector Commander of the Corps in Akwa Ibom and brief the HOCS on activities since assuming office about four months ago.
Kalu said the Corps had conducted a road audit across the state, which showed that Akwa Ibom had a relatively good road network but required more traffic signs and zebra crossings, especially around schools.
She disclosed that 98 schools had been identified as requiring zebra crossings, with the Corps already collaborating with relevant organisations to provide some of the crossings.
The FRSC commander added that discussions were ongoing with the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State to expand the initiative.
She said the Corps had also intensified road safety campaigns and was seeking the cooperation of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service for the training and retraining of drivers, particularly ahead of the yuletide season.
