According to a report by the Premier League’s official website on Wednesday, August 26 2026, Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has been named the Player of the Matchweek for the first round of the new Premier League season following his outstanding performance in the Blues’ 3-2 victory over Fulham.
Palmer played a decisive role in Chelsea’s successful start to the campaign during the west London derby at Craven Cottage.
The 24-year-old was directly involved in two of his side’s goals, creating the opportunity for Joao Pedro to put Chelsea ahead before scoring himself after the interval.
The England international was a constant threat to Fulham and showed his attacking quality throughout the encounter. He finished the game with five shots and recorded nine touches in the Fulham box, more than any other Chelsea player on the pitch.
His influence was also evident when Chelsea did not have possession. Palmer won 10 individual duels and regained the ball on seven occasions, highlighting the work he contributed outside his goalscoring and creative duties.
Those impressive statistics helped him secure the individual honour ahead of the other players shortlisted for the award. Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki, Hull City’s Semi Ajayi, Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood, Brentford’s Mamadou Sangare, Ipswich Town’s Julio Enciso and Leeds United’s Anton Stach were among the nominees.
Palmer will be particularly pleased with the recognition after an injury-hit previous season affected his availability and prevented him from consistently producing his best football.
His opening performance this season has, however, provided an early indication that he is determined to make a strong return.
Chelsea’s new campaign is being overseen by Xabi Alonso, and Palmer’s display will give the manager plenty of encouragement.
The midfielder’s creativity, movement and ability to influence important moments could prove crucial to Chelsea as they look to compete strongly throughout the season.
