Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has commissioned a newly remodelled and digitally equipped 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital and renamed the facility after the late human rights activist, Chima Ubani.
The hospital, located in Mgboko, headquarters of Obingwa Local Government Area, was commissioned on Tuesday.
Governor Otti said the investment was part of his administration’s efforts to modernise public healthcare institutions and improve access to quality medical services across the state.
He said the facility, which operates round the clock, would serve residents of Obingwa and neighbouring communities, including parts of Aba and Osisioma.
The hospital is equipped with a technology-driven data management system, modern laboratory and scanning facilities, theatre, eye care units, observation rooms, a healing garden and renewable energy infrastructure to support uninterrupted power supply.
Governor Otti said the decision to rename the hospital after Chima Ubani was in recognition of the late activist’s commitment to justice, democracy and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
He described Ubani as a mentor of the masses who died pursuing the ideals he lived for, adding that the honour would preserve his memory and inspire younger generations to embrace courage, service and integrity.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, said the hospital demonstrates the administration’s commitment to building a future-ready healthcare system.
He disclosed that the state government is undertaking 301 health infrastructure projects, including the construction and equipping of 277 Primary Healthcare Centres.
Professor Uche said Obingwa has benefited from 18 Primary Healthcare Centres, including 13 under Project Ekwueme and five under the Impact Project.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Odochi Azubuike, said the hospital was built and commissioned in 2015 but was met in a dilapidated condition by the present administration.
She said the facility had previously lacked admissions, drugs and essential equipment, but had now been transformed into a functional hospital.
Governor Otti urged the people of Obingwa to take ownership of the facility and protect it from vandalism.
