Tension erupted in Ikire, Osun State, on Monday after a violent clash reportedly broke out over control of a motor park at Naira and Kobo Junction, leaving two people feared dead.
Videos emerging from the scene showed two men apparently lying dead, one inside a vehicle with an open head wound and another lying face down in a pool of blood.
Sources who spoke with reporters said the crisis began when drivers allegedly affiliated with the Accord Party arrived at about 10:30am and attempted to take control of the park from drivers said to be loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
An eyewitness alleged that political thugs from both sides engaged in confrontation during the dispute.
A Toyota Hilux recently donated to the Ikire Divisional Police Station was reportedly damaged, with its windscreen smashed and tyres destroyed.
Another resident gave a different account, alleging that an Accord Party member was shot during the confrontation.
According to the source, members of the party subsequently went to the palace of the Akire of Ikire to complain that the Divisional Police Officer was involved in the incident.
Police, however, reportedly said the Accord members had abducted the Secretary of the Palm Oil Sellers Association in Ikire and that officers were pursuing the alleged abductors when an exchange of gunfire occurred.
The police reportedly claimed that a stray bullet killed one person.
The conflicting accounts could not immediately be independently verified.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Osun State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing the report. Calls to the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, by reporters went unanswered, while a response to text messages was still being awaited.
