Tears flowed in Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday as the remains of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, were laid to rest.
Family members, friends, colleagues and sympathisers gathered for the burial rites of the 66-year-old actor, who died on Sunday after battling stage-four cancer.
A video from the funeral procession showed mourners carrying Ogogo’s remains to his final resting place in accordance with Islamic rites.
His close friend and colleague, Yinka Quadri, was seen in tears as mourners consoled him.
Several Nollywood stars, including Jide Kosoko, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Mr Latin, Toyosi Adesanya, Ireti Osayemi and Bisi Omo Logbalogba, were among those who attended the burial.
Ogogo’s remains were taken to Ilaro, his hometown, on Sunday ahead of the lying-in-state ceremony and burial prayers.
The actor died at about 3pm on Sunday at the age of 66, according to an announcement by Jide Kosoko.
His death came days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for medical assistance, revealing that doctors had stopped chemotherapy because of his deteriorating condition.
Ogogo was one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema, with a career spanning more than four decades. He featured in hundreds of films and became one of the most recognisable faces in Nollywood.
His death has continued to draw tributes from colleagues, fans and prominent Nigerians who described his contribution to the Nigerian film industry as significant.
