Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver is mourning the death of his 2-year-old son, the team announced on Saturday.

The Bills’ general manager, Brandon Beane, expressed condolences to Oliver and his family, describing the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy” and assuring the family of the organisation’s continued support.

The team did not disclose the child’s cause of death.

However, authorities in Harris County, Texas, had responded in June to a report of a toddler found unresponsive in a swimming pool on Lago Trace Drive, an area where Oliver has a listed address.

The child was taken to a local hospital, where the toddler was pronounced dead, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Oliver, 28, is a Houston native who played college football for the Houston Cougars. He is entering his eighth NFL season with the Buffalo Bills.
